Utah CIS: Your Registration Hold Was Removed, but Your Academic Standing Hasn’t Changed

You’ve completed the Academic Standards Workshop required by the University of Utah.

The registration hold that previously prevented you from selecting classes has disappeared from Utah CIS.

But when you check your academic records, your standing still says Academic Warning.

Is something wrong with the system?

Not necessarily.

At the University of Utah, clearing a registration hold and improving your academic standing are two separate processes.

What an Academic Standards Hold Actually Means

Academic Standards holds are designed to prevent course registration until students complete specific academic support requirements.

They’re generally associated with academic performance that falls below the university’s standards.

For undergraduate students, maintaining good academic standing ordinarily requires a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0.

When academic performance falls below the required level, the university may assign an academic standing and place a corresponding registration hold.

The hold is a checkpoint, not the academic standing itself.

Where to Check Your Holds in Utah CIS

The university provides hold information through Campus Information Services.

From the Student Homepage, open the Tasks tile to review applicable holds and their details.

The information can identify which requirement is outstanding and which university office is responsible.

Not every hold has the same effect.

Some prevent registration, while others may relate to different administrative requirements.

Check the actual restriction before assuming it affects your ability to enroll.

Academic Warning and the Required Workshop

A student whose cumulative GPA falls below 2.0 may be placed on Academic Warning.

The university’s Academic Standards guidance describes a required workshop for students receiving this standing for the first time.

The workshop is delivered through Canvas and includes a workbook and quiz.

Completing the required activities allows the corresponding Academic Standards hold to be removed.

However, finishing the workshop doesn’t change the grades that caused the warning.

That’s why the academic standing can remain unchanged.

A Second Academic Warning Works Differently

Students who have previously completed the Academic Standards Workshop may face a different requirement if they receive another warning.

According to the university’s advising guidance, a student placed on Academic Warning for a second time must meet with an Academic Standards advisor rather than repeat the workshop.

The advisor meeting is the requirement for clearing the associated hold.

Completing that meeting doesn’t automatically restore Good Standing either.

The student’s academic performance still determines the academic standing.

Academic Probation May Involve Two Holds

Academic Probation involves additional requirements.

The university explains that students on Probation can receive two registration holds corresponding to separate steps.

Its advising guidance identifies meetings with a department advisor and an academic standards advisor as part of the process.

This means completing one required meeting may not clear every restriction.

If registration is still blocked, review the remaining holds rather than assuming the first meeting should have resolved everything.

Where to Find Your Academic Standing

Your academic standing isn’t necessarily displayed in the same location as your registration holds.

The university’s instructions direct students to:

Student Homepage → Academic Records → View Grades

Select your most recently completed term.

Your academic standing appears below the term and cumulative GPA information.

This is the appropriate place to check whether your academic status has changed.

Why Your GPA Matters More Than Hold Removal

Consider a student with a cumulative GPA of 1.85.

The student completes the Academic Standards Workshop, and the registration hold is removed.

Their cumulative GPA is still 1.85.

The workshop satisfied an advising requirement, but it didn’t replace previous grades.

The student therefore shouldn’t expect an immediate change to Good Standing.

Academic standing is determined by the applicable GPA and progression rules, not simply by whether a hold is active.

What Is Warning Continued?

The university also recognizes a status called Warning Continued.

This can apply when a student previously placed on Academic Warning earns a term GPA of at least 2.0 but still has a cumulative GPA below 2.0.

The improved term performance demonstrates progress, even though the overall GPA hasn’t recovered.

According to the university’s advising guidance, students on Warning Continued don’t receive an Academic Standards registration hold solely because of that standing.

They may remain in this category for multiple terms while improving their cumulative GPA.

Probation Continued Is Similar

A student on Academic Probation may also make progress without immediately reaching Good Standing.

If the next term GPA is at least 2.0 but the cumulative GPA remains below the required threshold, the university describes a Probation Continued status.

This distinction matters because a student can be making measurable academic progress while their overall standing hasn’t fully recovered.

The absence of an Academic Standards hold doesn’t mean that the student has completed the recovery process.

Registration Eligibility Is Not a Guarantee of Course Enrollment

Once an Academic Standards hold is removed, a student may be able to proceed with registration.

But ordinary registration conditions still apply.

A course may be full, require prerequisites, or have departmental restrictions.

The student must also have an eligible registration appointment.

If Utah CIS still prevents enrollment, review the actual registration message before assuming the Academic Standards hold has returned.

What If the Hold Should Have Been Removed?

If you’ve completed the required workshop or advising appointment but the hold remains visible, contact the responsible Academic Standards office.

Provide the type of hold, the requirement completed, and the date of completion.

Avoid repeating a workshop or scheduling unnecessary appointments without first confirming what remains outstanding.

The university’s Academic Standards team can clarify which requirement applies to your situation.

Track Both Records Separately

Utah CIS provides information about registration restrictions and academic performance, but those records answer different questions.

A hold tells you whether a particular administrative or advising requirement is preventing an action.

Academic standing describes your performance under the university’s academic standards.

If your registration hold disappears but your Utah CIS academic standing remains on Warning or Probation, that isn’t automatically an error. The hold can be cleared after completing required support activities, while your academic standing changes according to your GPA and the university’s progression rules.
